Hey guys. If you’re reading this before Midnight on the East coast, then you’re one of the first people to know that Sonic has been confirmed in Brawl. Apparently, Nintendo is holding a press conference as I type this and are making announcements regarding the next few months for the company, with particular focus on the Japanese market (the conference is in Japan). Anyway, Tobias the Fox (aka Tobias Amaranth) just sent me an IM with a link to the IGN live blog of Ge-maga magazine’s live blog of the event itself. The key translated phrases are, as quoted from IGN.com:
“14:24: Smash Bros. has been delayed in Japan until January 24, 2008. Nintendo shows a new trailer. Sonic is going to be a playable character! The trailer shows him transforming into Super Sonic. The game will include online fights. In addition, it will have online cooperative play of some form.”
Because this conference is still going, it’s understandable why there are no pictures or video yet. However, who wants to guess what tonight’s update on the Official Site will be? Hey, and online cooperative play, that’ll be good!
Personally, I never wanted Sonic in Brawl. He doesn’t fit the mold, either as a figher, or as a Nintendo character. I don’t care how many times you requested him, if he’s in there, they will have to seriously change the way he plays, which means, “Hello Super Slow Sonic!” Of course, I love Sonic, don’t get me wrong, but he seems to me to have all the wrong qualities to be a Smash character. Oh well, only time will tell.
If this is a joke, I’m going to LUBE SMASH somebody!

This game is going to rock the world, despite some unnecessary/redundant characters (Sonic=unnecessary for the reasons you listed, Ike=redundant).
Also…I am so stealing “Lube Smash” and using that phrase in everyday speech.
I got lube smashed once. Wasn’t as bad as I expected. ; )
I think he will be a fast, but weak character like fox or sheik. I know sonic has been nerffed for the olympic game. Bowser and peach could out run him.
I’d put money on sonic fanboys being either upset or overjoyed, depending on how good he is in the game. Bowser is still my guy of choice. (not counting krystal of course.) I hope they don’t fill the game with loads of non nintendo characters.

I know that Sonic was the most requested 3rd party character, but still! We’ve been waiting for FAR TOO LONG for Nintendo to confirm Krystal. They just need to get it over with so I can detach myself from the Dojo.
Link McCloud, what if she’s hidden? I love playing games and finding out what is hidden and what I uncover. Only if it’s a large effort do I want to know in advance. (Like the medals in Metal Gear Solid 2)
Looks like I’ll have to include Sonic now in the Subspace Emmisary chapter of my story, “Combat: Revolution” since he’s part of the battle now.
Maybe even one day, I’ll post this special chapter online someday. And yes, Krystal will be in it.

Counter-Question: Do you think that every single character on the site now is going to be instantly playable? I mean, there are now 22 characters confirmed for Brawl. There were what…14 or so starting characters at the start of Melee.
Some of them will be hidden. And because of that, I believe Krystal could still very well be confirmed on the Dojo.
I really hope Krystal will be available, and that during the game she’ll be strong enough.

btw, Is it possible, that I have read something about a ‘blue surprise’ in Brawl, which some people believed could be Krystal? Well.. If so, there it goes. (My guess :p)
Personally, I don’t think Krystal will turn up in Brawl, but let’s see what time brings.

I can just imagine the biggest Brawl let down: You go to check Dojo for updates, And to see a large picture of Krystal! However, she’s not a playable character. She’s an assist trophy!

Sonic looks NICE and fast, just as he should — they’re balancing him out by making sure he’s not too powerful, though.
Seriously, Sonic looks to be returning to form in Brawl moreso than he has in years.
I think Krystal needs to be in Brawl because the Fox series is popular enough to warrant an original character that doesn’t fight like Fox, and Smash needs more CHIX, man.
Krystal is THE most requested female Ninty character for Brawl, so she’s got more of a shot than any other female Nintendo character, don’t you think?

We’ve got 4 more months of waiting, so who knows what will come up?
Ya know, even if Krys isn’t in Brawl and Sonic doesn’t live up to his previous splendor, I still gotta give Nintendo some props for this game. It looks really, really good. And, as soon as I get a Wii, it’s the first game I’ll buy. (After the new SF, of course, if they release one.)
