I just got back from the Brawl session. Unfortunately, there was no photography allowed and they didn’t take questions. Sorry guys. I’ll see if there’s another way I can ask about Krystal.
However, from what he did say, I managed to gather quite a few interesting things. Here are the most interesting things he said (to me anyway).
The characters were all decided upon by July 7th, 2005, including characters that would later be cut (didn’t say what characters were cut).
Sonic was the exception to this, not being included until 2007. (YES! I predicted this!)
Character Selection
- Character had to stand out
- How much of a unique moveset they could have
- Looked for balance with other characters
- Development cost
Some characters couldn’t be included because of rights issues (no specifics mentioned).
Sakurai used 4-inch posable figures to design all the moves. He designed most of the moves himself this way.
Pit’s voice has changed in the English version (the Japanese version of Pit’s voice is really annoying).

I can understand why they didn’t take questions. They would likly have been swamped with ‘why isnt x in the game’ type one, but it still doesn’t give away the reason krystal was cut. : /
characters that ws cut(mewtwo,roy,dixie kong,toon zelad/shiek,and i cant think of the rest.)
“Some characters couldn’t be included because of rights issues”
Geno maybe?
Gamer18: I think “cut” means taken out but were in previous games. In that case, it’d be Dr. Mario, Mewtwo, Pichu, Young Link (replaced with Toon Link, though), Roy, etc. You can’t cut someone who isn’t in there in the first place. You just simply don’t include those.
S.Weltzin:Cut mean character that was decided and put on to the game but was taken out for some reason. mewtwo,roy,dixie kong,toon zelad/shiek charater data is on brawl’s disk.they are character that was being made or put on the game but was taken out,Cut, for so reason from the final roster.
Done by 2005… when did they have those polls to see what character was most wanted?
I knew it. I knew they didn’t really want fans’ input. They decided on the entire roster shortly after development began.
As for those requirements for being playable…
“Character had to stand out”
Gee, I’d say Krystal sure as hell stands out.
“How much of a unique moveset they could have”
Yeah, sure, that must explain Wolf, Falco, Lucas, Ganondorf and Toon Link’s movesets, amirite?
“Looked for balance with other characters”
What’s that one even supposed to mean?
The characters were cut from those originally decided upon, not previous versions (Melee).
@AJ
Balance in the sense of making sure that no character would have a huge advantage or disadvantage relative to the other characters.
Tons of characters in these games have huge advantages and disadvantages relative to other characters. Just like every fighting game.
@AJ
“Balance” means overall advantages. Like, you can’t have a character who is as solid as Bowser, fast as Sonic, and strong as Ganondorf. Instead, characters must have advantages and disadvantages, like high power balanced by low speed or easiness to knock away. Of course, there are other things to consider (Falcon’s knee is a nasty, NASTY move, though Falcon overall isn’t the best of characters; and Jigglypuff’s sleep attack (not sing) has massive power but is really hard to hit with). That’s what balance is: Trying to make sure some characters aren’t overall better than others. Of course, that doesn’t always work, as can be seen by Bowser’s overall suckiness in Melee compared to, say, Fox.
If all the characters were decided upon by July 7th 2005…then that means there was no point to Sakurai’s poll, since he had already decided on all the characters. I guess he just wanted a way to get people more interested in the game, not because he wanted to hear fans’ input. Or, maybe the poll was for trophies, not playable characters? Sakurai said in his recent IGN interview, that adding more characters to the game than there already are would have just been extra “fat”, and nothing he would want to do. Shows how out of touch with the fans he is.
@iluvnintendo1983
He’s in touch with great game making. That much is true. He’s right that they shouldn’t just add more characters, it’s just that Krystal’s lack of inclusion is odd.
As for the poll, perhaps it was used to decide which characters of the ones they had selected to cut and which to leave.
Unless they have already started work on a sequel, which seems very unlikly.
The lack of Geno and Mewtwo is unforgivable.
Somehow I doubt they are working on a sequel as it seems Nintendo wants to do one smash bros game per console system they release. Though some may disagree with me on this but the next system they do better have some kind of Hard Drive on it or (If the price drops to where it is affordable by the public) a SSD (Solid State Drive).
Agreed. Although I’m still waiting for news on the new F-Zero. Simpley because I find it hard to imagine one better than the GC game.
Only thing I can see the Wii F-Zero having is Wi-Fi play and if your lucky the ability to create your own tracks and share them with friends. Also more parts to customize your racer with.
Woah, wait, they’re making a new F-Zero? O.O
AJ- I hope so.
Unique moveset is krystal all over. Who else in smash bros history has had a staff? Geez ¬_¬
I think the poll probably was for assist trophies. Mainly because the description on dojo for the dude from sin and punishment said something like we had a lot of requests for him, so we decided to include him in the game.
