Something I had long assumed has been confirmed for me today. SFRunner sent me a link to an old article on the history of Star Fox. In it, on the last page, it mentioned rights issues due to the buy-out by Microsoft of Rare. All characters from existing franchises (Donkey Kong series, Star Fox series) became the sole property of Nintendo while all other franchises (Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Perfect Dark) became Rare’s, and therefore Microsoft’s. Thus, Krystal, and all the characters of Star Fox Adventures are officially, and unquestionably owned by Nintendo.

i don’t get it Mr. Krystal what do you mean
It means, when Dinosaur Planet was made, it was made by Rare, so Rare had property of Krystal. And Rare was going to be sold to Microsoft, so we would have lost Krystal for the Star Fox series, basically.
But, in the buy-out agreement I guess, all characters already made by Rare were transfered to Nintendo.
@kldf
There were some questions about who actually owned the rights to Krystal. I’ve now confirmed it with a third party that Nintendo owns the rights to Krystal.
ya
so what does that mean for krystal
It means, for one thing, that the reason she wasn’t in Brawl had nothing to do with rights issues. It also means that there’s no chance of Krystal NOT appearing in future games because of rights issues.
k but krystal isnt a assiant tropny i have looked on alot of websites and i don’t see her in anything
No, what I meant was, of all the possible reasons why Krystal is not playable in Brawl, rights issues is not one of them.
OoOo
So she’s considered third party now? What?…
@Zwolf
No, she’s considered first party now.
Oi… -.-
She’s Nintendo’s (or “first party” as Mr. Krystal said). She is not in Brawl because Sakurai was like “I’m not going to allow Krystal to be in Brawl!”…
Ok, maybe he didn’t say that, but she’s completely Nintendo’s; no “ifs, ands, or buts” about it.
Are just confirming this for piece of mind.
*Cheer* All right!! Krystal stays with Nintendo!!! Whoo-hoo! I feel so much better, but I still don’t understand why Krystal didn’t join Brawl. Does she need to wait until the next Smash Bros. game? Or what? Can Krystal at least go back to Team Star Fox (I don’t want to see Panther with her)?
@Chris
Basically, yes.
Yeah, I was little worried about that myself, what with Rare being sold to Microsoft and all.
Any Star Fox Wii leaks/rumours?
It might get a little slow around here after the interviews and the big podcast now that Brawl is out, no real Star Fox events until the Wii title is confirmed.
Good news, thanks for the info Mr. Krystal.
@Zwolf
Don’t forget, there are always people drawing pictures of Krystal. We’ll likely have fanart updates while we wait for major stuff to happen.
But yeah. It’ll get slower than it has been, I imagine, unless we get another big argument about Krystal’s relationships or whatnot. :D
@ZWolf
Provided there really is a Star Fox Wii game coming out.
@AJ
Yeah… True.
@S.Weltzin
Yeah, pictures are nice, but I’d rather have a leak.
@ Link McCloud what does first party mean
It means anything created or developed by Nintendo’s in-house designers {like Shiggy’s very own EAD} or any companies that work exclusively with them {like Intelligent Systems, HAL, Camelot and Game Freak}.
@AJ
Actually, there is indeed a Star Fox game coming out for the Wii. Nintendo Power says so.
@Mr. Krystal
I read that whole article, and woah! Who knew Star Fox had such a crazy history? It’s really something! No wonder Adventures turned out the way it did. Don’t get me wrong, though. It’s a great game with beautiful graphics. But the visuals got pretty glitchy near the end. Throwing Andross in there wasn’t terribly imaginative either. But that’s what happens when you have short deadlines.
@Padron
Could you tell me which issue and what page you saw this?
@Padron
Nintendo Power is hardly a reliable source. When Assault came out, they’re the same magazine that said Krystal is a cat and should therefore go to Panther. They’re the same magazine that once said Mewtwo is female. I could go on for quite some time.
All that’s been said is that Shigeru Miyamoto thinks it would be interesting to try and develop a Star Fox game around the idea of controlling it with the Wii remote. He never actually said he’d do it.
@AJ
They never actually said Krystal was a cat. They just said she acted feline-like. And it was Command when they said that.
Actually, one issue did say she was a cat, not that she acted like one, which still doesn’t make sense to say.
My point is still valid though–Nintendo Power is not the most reliable source.
@AJ
Well, out of all of the video game magazines it is.
@Mr. Krystal and AJ
My mistake, guys. I could’ve sworn I saw it listed in the Game Watch section. But I just checked the most recent issue, and it isn’t there.
I have a feeling there will be a Star Fox Wii game, but there is currently no evidence to prove it. I’ll stay vigilant, though.
Too bad that RARE was bought by Microsoft. The good thing is that Krystal is ” First Party”. Now, there won’t br this legal rights battle.
As far as leaks go, Reggie Fils-Aime did say that Nintendo had some huge announcements for this year’s E3.

Something tells me it’s just gonna be something about their next Zelda game or the upcoming Animal Crossing Wii game.
@AJ
I dunno…we can always hope, at least. If its another Zelda game, I won’t complain :)
@AJ
No, I feel strongly about this. I remember specifically having this discussion before on the KLA. They are unfortunately down at the moment, but the place where I believe you are referring is Nintendo Power, volume 208, on the second page of the Star Fox Command coverage. As soon as I can get access to that image, I’ll post it.
In the previous issue, they called her a fox and I DO have an image of that one.
No, that’s not the one I’m talking about. I forget which one it was, but I distinctly remember reading one where some random article or preview actually said she’s a cat.
Either way, it’s stupid for them to compare her to a cat at all. Then again, Nintendo Power’s writers aren’t always known for making smart statements.
Strangely enough, several other magazines have been making the same mistake of calling her a cat since Adventures’ release, and one even called her a ferret. o_o
Ahhh, Aj clammering up the posts again …
Oh well, you scared me for a minute Mr. Krystal, I thought I was gonna need to change the copyright info for all my Krytal pics on DA. Glad to know we were right all along XDD.
@AJ
Well, could you please figure out which one or post a picture? I have all the issues that Nintendo would have mentioned Krystal in Adventures, Assault, and Command, but they are at home at the moment (Louisiana).
@ Ayama
I have every right to post, especially when it’s a REPLY to someone. Get off of your high horse and stop acting like you’re above me.
@ Mr. Krystal
Unfortunately, I’ve long forgotten which one it was in, and I don’t have any pictures of it. I don’t even have it anymore. I stopped keeping those things long ago.
@AJ
Well, I’ll research it, but it’s been my experience that Nintendo Power has been very accurate with these sort of things. It’s the Official Nintendo Magazine of Europe that’s famous for inaccuracies and making predictions.
Maybe I just have bad luck when it comes to picking up issues of Nintendo Power then… :/
Perhaps. lol
@Everyone
Hey,at least she stays with Nintendo.I was kinda worried about it myself.
