Who Is Krystal?
Krystal is a character from the Star Fox series of games. She is a blue, anthropomorphic vixen originating from the planet Cerinia. Cerinia was doomed to an unknown fate from an unknown cause, and Krystal was the only survivor. She wandered the Lylat system in search of answers and helped those she met along the way. She was 19 when she received the distress signal from Sauria (Dinosaur Planet) and stopped to help. After being rescued, Krystal and Fox McCloud began to show feelings for each other. Since the Saurian incident, Krystal took Peppy’s Arwing Pilot position while he remained at tactical. She was 20 during the events of Star Fox Assault. During Star Fox Command, Krystal played a rather pivotal role in determining who ultimately defeats the Anglar army. She revealed herself to be quite stubborn and vengeful after being forced to leave the Star Fox team shortly before the start of Star Fox Command. Krystal’s age is unknown during Command, but she is probably 24 or older by the start of Star Fox Command (enough time for Star Fox to be disbanded, the actual quote is “in the years that followed”).
Krystal was originally a creation of Rareware in their unreleased game “Dinosaur Planet” for the Nintendo 64. The game would later be reworked into Star Fox Adventures. You can read more about Krystal’s creational origin in another article. Krystal made a few cameo appearances in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Krystal from Star Fox Adventures, Star Fox Assault, and Star Fox Command
Psychic Abilities
Krystal has some psychic powers. Krystal can sense enemy’s weaknesses, and she has some foresight. Krystal is also able to read “thought patterns.” It is not known whether this means she can read thoughts themselves or simply emotions. She can channel Krazoa spirits. More than just giving them a container, her body can facilitate large spiritual transfer as seen when Krystal inadvertently revived Andross. She appears to be able to fire blue energy beams from nowhere as seen at the beginning of Star Fox Adventures. These beams could have been a plot hole or the Cloudrunner, however. Though not confirmed, it is thought that Krystal can read enough into other being’s minds to allow her to easily speak their native tongue, being fluent in both Lylatian (English for English-speaking countries) and Saurian, the Dino Language.
Krystal’s Staff
Krystal’s Staff is a magic energy weapon with multiple uses and plug-ins. Though Star Fox Adventures only show Krystal making very limited use of it, the Staff is very powerful in both Krystal’s and Fox’s hands. It can be used as a normal battle staff. The tips of the Staff can be used for picking locks, activating switches, and as a simple lever. More advanced uses of the Staff involve its magical energy and upgrade properties. With various upgrades and gemstones (used for power), the Staff can fire energy blasts, create shockwaves, provide a temporary jet boost, shoot a “freeze beam,” and allow the bearer to resemble a Sharpclaw (this was an artificial upgrade made by Slippy). When not in use, the Staff can shrink to less than half of its normal size, making it very portable. Krystal’s Staff does not make an appearance in Star Fox Assault. If she wasn’t carrying it with her in her Arwing, the Staff is presumed destroyed with the rest of the Great Fox.
Krystal’s Ships
In Star Fox Adventures, Krystal is believed to have arrived on Sauria with the ship that’s used to transport Tricky by the Sharpclaws and at the end of the game, when Krystal flies up to the Great Fox. It looks like a generic transport ship of some kind. In Star Fox Assault, all members of Star Fox have identical Arwings. In Star Fox Command, Krystal, like all of the members of Star Fox, has a customized Arwing. Krystal’s is shaped like a bird’s body and is called the Cloud Runner, which is also the name of a Saurian dinosaur tribe. It has twin lasers with single lock capability. It has one bomb slot and 3/4th’s shields and boost. When Krystal isn’t flying as a member of Star Fox, she uses a Corneria Fighter, much like Bill’s, except that Krystal’s is only green and white, where Bill’s also has some orange.
Controversies
Krystal was created to be an attractive female character. The relatively large amount of skin fur she shows off in her Adventures outfit was a lot more than what is typical for a Nintendo character. The attractiveness of Krystal led to two types of controversies.
- People would often take the way Krystal was clothed in Adventures as proof of her promiscuousness. However, if one would play the games, they would see that she does not remotely act that way.
- Others found the fact that people found her attractive to be vile, since she is not human. These thoughts and her general popularity with the furry fandom have led to many fights on the internet. This is a subject to large to talk about here. Have a look at why I like Krystal to see my arguments on the matter.
Before Star Fox Adventures, Fox already had a love interest via the official comics. Her name was Fara Phoenix, a vixen with more natural coloring. Many long-time fans were angry with Nintendo for officially disavowing all knowledge of the character with the new game taking priority over the comics. Most fans have stopped fighting on this issue, but many continue to dislike Krystal for other reasons.
Krystal is sometimes blamed for the fall of Star Fox’s popularity as a game franchise. While, she was certainly present during Adventures, which was the first game to start a downward trend in sales, correlation does not imply causation. That is, just because Krystal was around during the fall doesn’t mean that she is the reason for the fall. Indeed, it’s hard to argue that a game series will loose popularity because of character choice. Most fans agree that the decline was because of Nintendo’s trend of moving away from classic on-rails game mechanics, preferring to add a ground and third-person shooter mechanic.
For a time, the French Wikipedia page for Krystal listed Krystal’s last name as “Buranetto”. It was later confirmed by Z!FF, who had the French games, that there was no evidence of her last name, even in France. Furthermore, Nintendo confirmed that Krystal has no official last name in America. Original Report
