E3 is next week! It looks like it will be a very exciting one, with announcements of Nintendo’s next console, lots of new games, and tons of rumors to confirm or squash. What do we know? Project Cafe will be there, playable by visitors. I expect we will see more talk of Star Fox 64 3D. It’s due out next month in Japan (you can already order it) and we’ll probably get a US release date too. There have been rumors (where have I heard this one before) that Nintendo is-working-on-a-console/will-announce-a-launch-title Star Fox game! No telling if those rumors are any good, they’ve been around forever. Then again, Star Fox and F-Zero are due for a new game, having skipped this console generation (the Wii).

In specific SF643D news, Miyamoto says that it will have essentially two methods of play that can be used in tandem: the analog stick and the gyroscopic sensor. From the description, it sounds like we’ll be able to use typical SF64-type controls or use the gyroscope functionality in much the same way as Command used the touch screen (though hopefully a bit more naturally). New images were released, showing close-ups of Fox and crew, as well as the box art. Unfortunately, we now know that it won’t support online play at all. This significantly disappoints many. I’m not terribly upset, as I’d only end up getting beaten by all of you anyhow. :P

One last bit of E3 rumor that might involve our fair blue vixen: rumors of a launch-ready Smash Bros is in the air…

There are bunches and bunches of rumors going on in the last couple days about the newest Nintendo console, the successor to the Wii. Everyone seems to be calling it “Project Cafe.” Many high-ranking sources have said some of the same things, so if anything can be believed, we will see the next Nintendo console at E3 in June. At least one place is talking about a new Star Fox in early development for the Wii successor, but no known date that we’ll see it. Whatever happens, looks like E3 is going to be very interesting this year.

Here it is, my pre-E3 post. I got some serious third degree BURNS on rumors of the past, so I am more than careful about saying what will and won’t be somewhere before it happens. As it stands now, there is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER from any known credible source indicating Star Fox will be there. There are tons of “maybe’s” and lots of “they should’s,” but nothing solid. Nothing from reliable sources or off the record or whatever. No, this does not even count as a rumor, it’s wishful thinking.

</rant>

So what will be there? As far as new stuff goes, we know Nintendo will talk 3DS and Zelda Wii (because they said they would). There will also probably be a lot more detail on Metroid: Other M and Pokemon White/Black. Other than that, I expect a few surprise games, of which maybe one or two will blow us away (Metroid: Other M, New Super Mario Bros. Wii), while the remainder are good, but not wet-your-pants exciting. That’s the formula they followed last year anyway.

In recent days, IGN has claimed that Retro’s secret project was a Donkey Kong revival. Donkey Kong has not had any non-spinoff games since 1999′s Donkey Kong 64 (unless you count the Mario vs Donkey Kong series), so everyone making the argument that “Star Fox must be announced this year because it’s time for the next game to come down the pipe,” have forgotten the huge gaps Nintendo has had for other series, like Metroid. I would say that given the above and the existence of a source even IGN trusts, it’s far more likely that Retro’s project is DK, not Star Fox as many of us had hoped. Either way, there’s no guarantee that Retro will show its project at all this year, so don’t get your hopes up.

This year, for the first time, Nintendo will be doing its own live streaming of the press conference. Just point your browser at e3.nintendo.com and wait for Tuesday morning at 9 AM Pacific. Afterward, I bet they will list all their announcements in webpage form on the same site. I will be monitoring the conference as well, and will do my best to get you the latest Star Fox and/or Krystal news if or when it happens.

According to Digg.com, a GameFAQs user named slashx234 requested that Pat Cashman, the announcer voice in Brawl, record character introductions for characters that didn’t make it. He agreed, and the audio he sent back has been posted at http://brawlannouncer.ytmnd.com/. Yes, Krystal is one of the characters. In fact, it seems like every major character that was requested as playable has been included except for Geno.

Over the couple of years I’ve been running the KA, I’ve managed to develop a few contacts within the industry. I was just contacted by one of those contacts (sorry, can’t mention any names here). My contact sent me a note about some internal discussions held by Nintendo. Though no new Star Fox games were confirmed or denied in the leaked information, my contact told me that the group that manages Nintendo’s fictional character intellectual properties (Mario characters, Metroid characters, Star Fox characters, etc.) have decided to make Krystal a cat for future Star Fox games while doing a yearly review of that series. It seems that Nintendo wants to further develop the Krystal/Panther relationship, or at least provide more ambiguity in regards to Krystal and Fox’s relationship.

This is by no means new. As you are no doubt aware, Krystal was originally designed to be a cat, as seen below in the unreleased “Dinosaur Planet,” the game that would later become Star Fox Adventures.

I can’t say I’m happy about this. Krystal has always been “Everyone’s Favorite Blue Fox.” Now, I may end up having to change that to “Everyone’s Favorite Blue Cat” or something. Just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Of course, this change doesn’t bode well for Fox and Krystal’s relationship either, which makes me sad.

I’m not going to change any of the pages or the site’s subtitle until we get a more official announcement from Nintendo. Hopefully, this is all just some cruel joke.

Edit:
Happy April Fools’ Day! Yes, it was a joke. A total fabrication on my part.
