Dinosaur Planet & Star Fox Adventures: A Rare Retrospective
[Gore Warning] - Relatively mild (and low poly) gore in a couple of places towards the end of the video.
Today, The Nostalgic Gamer posted his 10th episode in his continuing chronicling of Rareware's history. This episode, he covers the development of Dinosaur Planet, and the game's transition to become Star Fox Adventures. This is a really great summary of what happened, showing lots of footage from the original Dinosaur Planet. He even concludes what I do about Star Fox Adventures: It's a pretty good game, but not utterly fantastic the way some of Rareware and Star Fox's other previous hits were. The purchase by Microsoft was touched on, but those details will be saved for the next episode.

I think the reason some think Dinosaur Planet would have been a superior game is because Star Fox Adventures has so much potential. While I agree the game on a whole isn’t amazing it does have some amazing things in there. It would be great if they could remake the game for Switch. Not expecting them to put too much effort into a remake if they ever did one but it would allow for time to polish the game up a bit. That could make a huge difference for certain parts of the game.
i feel like this was rare “thank you” gift to nintendo before they want to microsoft (aka the dark and awful side).
You know, speaking of remakes, I think that Krystal would be more playable, making her braver and stronger than the original Adventures.
@J.T. Gillin
Actually, I believe we needed more play time with Krystal. I felt it was like:
“You got your first mission: ‘Find the krazoa spirits’. Ok, looks easy but uh-oh!
You got trapped in a crystal eh?, Well, sucks to be you then. At least, for the rest of the game you are going to be a very nice “Eye catcher”. Also, don’t worry, we will find someone else to complete the mission for you.”
Also she had a weapon and she lost it in a dumb way (COME ON! She could easily make a dive and grab the staff, or at least show some effort instead of watching it fall and looking like an idiot!). And the chance that it miraculously “crash-landed” at the spot that Fox landed his arwing, is one in a million (except if is written in the script, then it must land near Fox because reasons and… you need the staff to beat the game or something like that…).
All in all, I’m seeing things like this in the game (and more!) that baffles my mind. In moments like this I wish it would been Dinosaur Planet (with some Starfox cameos).
@Jimaki Well, that may be the case, but that’s not what everyone wanted to see. And besides, Fox was supposed to get captured in a crystal, not Krystal! Boy, Nintendo just made a dumb idea back then, almost 15 years ago. But I wish it would have been Dinosaur Planet, too.
Okay, maybe Krystal does need some more playtime.
