Star Fox: Event Horizon New Trailer and Demo
This morning, UndyingNephalim posted a new trailer he's been working on. Yes, he's going for the 80's corny sci-fi vibe here. You can see Krystal's new design in there too.
The third demo is available on ModDB. I don't yet know what new features the third demo has, but I'll update this post once I can find out.
Thanks to Leo for the heads up.

The new trailer of Star Fox Event Horizon is awesome!! :)
I must say, Fox’s VA sounds excellent just from that short segment! The animation was pretty good as well! AAAAND Krystal looks much better than how she did before.
This is looking to be a really good game. This and then the true Star Fox game coming out soon is too much to handle!
Gyaaah! Those are some butt-ugly character models there. I can’t say I care much for the style UndyingNephalim is going for here, but I’ll give him credit for the energetic presentation and what appears to be a high-octane shooter. We’ll see how the finished product turns out.
Careful Glitcher… UndyingNephalim comments here too, he will read that! :P
I think they are pretty good for “homemade” and are an improvement over the previous ones. NOTHING can fix Slippy lol and Fara could do without the glasses. Its better to make your own models than rip them like that one guy who ripped “Galaxy” Mario in that Mario 64 level remake, you see what happened to that didnt ya? The big Ninty coming in with a cease and desist (as usual)
Well ever since I d/led the very first demo, I just decided to skip all the demos and go straight to the final game when its ready!
@Glitcher & @FoxMcCloudFF7
There’s loads to improve and he knows that. UndyingNephalim is not above criticism, but let’s stick to constructive criticism. Suggest ways to improve, don’t just say “it’s ugly.” I’ve been doing what I can to help as well, advising him on rendering techniques, lighting, and that trailer itself. The characters look much better than they did just a week ago thanks to the application of ambient occlusion. An artist such as you, Glitcher, should be able to advise UndyingNephalim on where his models are off artistically.
Hah, people can say it looks butt-ugly if they really think that. I’m assuming free speech and expression of opinion is accepted here, no matter how negative they might be. That being said, specific critique is more helpful then a generic “Ahhh kill it with fire!” remark as Mr. K pointed out.
I can be more specific if you like. What bothers me about these character models is a general problem with proportions. For starters, all of their heads are too small in relation to their bodies. I don’t mind Falco as much, who is typically the tallest of the group, but everyone looks like human models that have been swapped out with animal heads, instead of respecting Lylat proportions. This is particularly conspicuous for Fay, whose head looks like it’s been pickled for a week and lacks any sort of cuteness.
Everyone’s face just creeps me out. Their eyes are too small, surrounded with black mascara, and beady pupils give them a piercingly unnatural stare. Miyu’s face looks like it’s been condensed in proportion to her head, which I said is too small already, and Krystal is noticeably off-model from the crescent-moon shape of her head. The whole cast delivers an unnerving Uncanny Valley feel, hence my earlier comment. Ironically, the best model in the group is ROB, who is also the most lifeless of any of them. Go figure.
animation is nice, but the texture in this video (i watch in hd are very low res. but doesn’t really matter for gameplay, if the camera is a bit off). doing ground missions, hopefully you don’t use assault weapon model and create you own.
@Glitcher
I am really not a fan of the huge head, tiny body proportions in canon Star Fox games, Command really put a nail in that coffin for me. I always thought the huge heads and tiny legs and arms looked really weird, even a game as visually impressive as Adventures. The more human proportions were completely intentional, so this might be a stylistic preference?
Quick question: for the backstory of this game you said that Krystal had a falling out and joined the CDF, flying with Fay. Seeing as you said that Fay is part of Star Fox now, and that before you said she had never made it on the team, have you changed the story slightly? My original guess was that this game seeks to use Command’s setup.
Originally the script and dialog for the game was being written by someone else, but it seems like they might not be able to continue on with it. Some aspects of it have changed as a result, though Krystal leaving the team and being part of the CDF with Fay has not changed. It’s safe to say the trailer takes place during a time when they all finally team up together.
Looks amazing ^^ Too bad my computer lags whenever I try to play games on it… guess I’ll just wait for someone to upload a playthrough video on youtube.
So everyone joins together with a 80’s “the band is back together” kind of feel?
You had me at Krystal coming back actually. Thank goodness. :D
*Fangirl Scream* I love it! I love the new character designs, I love the scene at the end, and I especially love it how he showed the characters in the cockpit of their craft. For some reason, I really love cockpit views of my favorite characters. I don’t really know why… probably my Asperger’s at work.
@UndyingNephalim
I have to mirror Glitcher’s criticisms, going for a more realistic look is fine but there needs to be a happy medium for it to look right, and as they stand most of the characters here look far too generically human with very small, strangely sculpted, off-model faces… it all comes off as awkward and unnatural. Fox, Fay and Krystal easily being the worst. For a decent example of more realistic proportions while remaining faithful to the originals, look at JECBrush on Deviant Art.
@Reynard
I don’t know if I like JECBrush’s proportions either. His Fox McCloud is a super buff creepy hunk of a Hulk.
Build isn’t the point, it’s the scale of head to body while remaining faithful to their original designs. If anything please look at your faces, they are highly off-model and some are kind of hard to look at. Krystal’s got a giant forehead, sunken eyes and an odd pointed chin, Fay has a disturbing, square overbite, Miyu’s mouth sits too flat and too far forward on her face, and with the scale and oddly white coat design, fox and Fara look like Dr. Horrible wearing fox masks.
@uhh… @UndyingNephalim?
I guess the important question is how do they look in motion? Pretty much everything seems to be directed at the lower res preview image with a light shining right at their faces, not how they actually look in motion in the trailer. I’ll not defend the “sunken eyes” as the thick lines around the eyes unintentionally resulted in something like that, but I’m sticking with my guns with the proportions. As I said, I kind of loathe the canon proportions, so “remaining true” is not exactly a goal of mine. I want more realistic proportions for my characters, not the cartoony big heads and tiny arms/legs. I really don’t get the “Fox and Fara wearing masks” vibe at all, is anyone else getting that?
It’s difficult to judge the models in motion when the characters only appear in the trailer for one second. From what we’ve seen, three people have complained about the proportions in the few comments posted here, so perhaps you should take a hint from that. Owing to the difficulty of resizing, re-texturing and re-rigging 3D models, perhaps it’s best if you mask the proportions with upper body shots.
@Glitcher
Re-sizing, re-texturing, and re rigging is not that big of a deal, I’ve done it several times for all of the characters in this game over the last year. Check out some of the older models to see how they’ve changed. I’ll be taking the critique of getting rid of the black lines around their eyes and other small specifics I did not intend. As for proportions though it’s not an issue of being too much work to redo them; I just sincerely want human like proportions for the characters. Again, I do not like the big headed cartoony proportions of Adventures, Assault, and especially Command. I intentionally stayed away from emulating that style.
People be talking about bad models. I am over here like… I hope to get models that look that good in a couple of years. I am still a novice at 3D modeling. Can’t even imagine how hard a game with full models, voice acting, sound effects, animation and all that other stuff is to make. I hope to be able to do that in a couple of years.
I’m a big fan of accurate mouth animation to match words, especially with speaking mouths that aren’t shaped like human mouths.
I want to see more of that.
5/5
IT SHOULD ALSO BE FOR THE 3DS AS WELL
wait there’s two krystals?
A good one and a bad one
let me guess the bad one is a genetic clone of krystal…
good guess eh…
