Hi there I have a question for you and all Star Fox fans. What kind of game mechanic you wished the Star Fox series had? Example (more open world, more strategic gameplay) what are your thoughts?
LucasJG1994
November 14, 2015 | 6:25 PM
@LucasJG1994
I personally loved the idea of a more open world star fox game, adventures and assault allowed for a great amount of roaming. I’d also like to think adventures was the best the series had to offer, with such and open world and strong character plots. A game similar to adventures, but more star fox oriented, would be the kind of game I would like to see. Also, id be ok with a slightly more mature game, while on not saying sex-n-stuff, maybe more evil and sinister enemys who don’t sound like role playing 5 year olds :P, maybe some blood and violence (if lasers leave much blood). Just want a game that takes it self seriously with annd open world. Now I sound like I’m talking about Bethesda games XD star fox but with a skyrim like twist to it lol wouldn’t that be something.

Actually, come to think of it, I think star fox could be implemented in all sorts of different game styles. An RPG like final fantasy, a strategy story driven game like fire emblem 0_0. Maybe a first person online shooter like the call of duty’s XD ok maybe that’s to far lol… But I’d play a star fox fps against friends ;). Anything different, I don’t know how long star fox can run on rail shooters :/ they where fun and new back then, but they need to advance.

@Happylion18
I too agree with you about Star Fox advancing from rail shooters and to have more open world features. What about character creation? Like giving you the option to make your own character, would that make it interesting? Or would that take away the enjoyment?

November 14, 2015 | 7:55 PM
@LucasJG1994
I was gonna talk about that, but something in the back of my head says it would be a controversial topic. I think it would be a great idea ^_^. If they had preset star fox characters and then a customization option, I could work with that. The way it works and options of customization would probably very, depending on what kind of star fox game we were talking about. Also, I can’t stop thinking of that star fox fps idea. Like star wars battlefront style XD. You could have a custom character or cornerian soldiers vs another team battlefield style. Also, occasionally a player would get the option to playa special character from say, team star fox or star wolf. I remember playing a Lord of the Rings game like that. What would you like and what are your thoughts LucasJG1994. And anyone else :P Mr.krystal?

I get your point. We’ve been playing as Fox McCloud for so long and we don’t want that to change. In fact when I first played Star Fox adventures, I feel like they introduced Krystal a bit dangerously. I mean, I saw Fox on the cover thinking i’ll be playing him straight away when Krystal appeared and it surprised me. It was after playing the game she became my most favorite (including Fox) Character. What I would like to see is having the option to command your teammates, like the Star Wars Commando.

Well, I am highly biased in my love for star fox adventures, but I can not use it fairly as an argument for much. It was my first video gam every! It was when I turned 2, I was very social but couldn’t read much. I didn’t have my own opinions on the world yet. My parents unboxed and setup the new game cube and game for me. I didn’t know what was going on when it started. I believe my family got it for me because, being two, it looked like a game with fun animal character. I do remember my grandparents being there, watching when I first turned it on. Seeing Krystal my first time, it was what my mind told me a game must be. So star fox adventures was what gave me my thoughts on gaming. Although my family members watching me play the start of the game had some funny reactions I can remember about krystals look and outfit XD…. Shit hit send early :P. Back to the actual topic XD. While I think a game more about other characters fighting against each other, and custom characters, I feel it wouldn’t be taken well by the community unless the main characters were implemented a bit. Either way, a game with customizable characters would be a great way to change up the formula for the star fox games. There is especially a need for change in gameplay. We don’t really need anymore of the rail shooter genre. What game play style would you like to see get the star fox treatment. ^_^ I like this topic, even if it is only talking about wants and it probably wont happen, we can hope and enjoy the thought :P

Not into the dragon ball thing, but that idea is genius. I was trying to think of how the single player game would work with the players own character while progressing the star fox story. I couldn’t disagree with you guys more. A game’s quality is almost never determined by what characters (user-created or not) are in the story. What matters is mechanics: is the game actually fun to play? If it implements a gameplay mode, is that mode good or just ok?
If it were up to me, I would be doing mostly what Nintendo is doing right now with Star Fox Zero: a mostly single-player focused game that is an adventure/shooter, where the characters stay inside their armored and maneuverable vehicles. This talk of FPS and open world tells me you don’t want a Star Fox game, you instead want world and character mod for Grand Theft Auto or Skyrim.
As far as adding features/mechanics, here’s what I’d suggest:
Have a main story with branching paths, same as in Star Fox 64, but for extra points, or as bonus levels, one can do ‘bounty’ levels, where the Star Fox team must accomplish a mission for pay for clients that are not the Cornerian military. What missions you decide to take decide what advantages and ship upgrades you get to use in the real missions. The choices you make in the side missions could even effect which real missions branches you can reach.
Have a huge variety of mission types. Star Fox 64 level design really shined because, even though every level was flying and shooting, you were doing different things on every level: stopping a bomb with a time limit (Fichina), fighting rivals (Fichina, Venom II), exploring a derelict base (Sector X), defending a base from an enemy army (Katina), sneaking through a security system (Zoness), precision flying in a hostile environment (Meteo, Solar, Venom I), direct assault (Area 6, Venom I), maze flying (Venom II), chasing (Macbeth), escort/protection of your own assets from incoming attack (Sector Z), search and rescue (Titania), defeating a multi-step security system (Bolse). I would add even more mission types, so that you were always doing something very different, even if your actions at their core were just flying and shooting.
At certain times/locations in some missions, you would have the opportunity to choose certain actions for your teammates to perform (defend me, flank enemy, distract the enemies ahead, etc). The choices you make would determine how easy or how hard it would be for you to survive, and might control which branching paths you could take. Also, what choices you could make would depend both on the context of the level, and which teammates were available.
I would make multiple characters playable. You would always play the ‘squad’ leader, but who got to be squad leader depends on you choices and the level at hand. This is not for the purposes of allowing you to pick whatever character you want, however. Rather, it’s about the fact that every character would have distinct advantages either in their personal abilities or their ships’ capabilities. For example: Fox would be a good all around fighter. Falco could fly faster and with more agility, but would have weaker shields. Slippy would be able to target specific kill spots on enemies, making even tough enemies one-hit kills with good player precision, and he’d have pretty great shields, but he would be slow and less maneuverable. Krystal would be able to see where enemies WILL be in a few seconds’ time (a psychic foresight), making her impossible to ambush and making it very easy for her to lead enemies, but she would have very weak shields. And (for fun), Tricky’s ship would have no weapons at all, but would be designed with the armor and sprint speed to physically ram enemies.

@Mr.Krystal
While I agree with you on much of what you said, I feel the star fox franchise could also evolve into something more. I don’t remember much of it, but back when people rented games, i saw a game from the gundam series, and being so young and seeing a cool cover, i had to try it. While star fox does have a all range mode, this game I played had much larger areas to explore with many things going on in more than one location at a time. The fights go on in many layers of space and had a map with sectors. If the star fox franchise was to keep specifically to there flight roots, they should advance onto a more dynamic game play style. But, what I was thinking, was changing to a more Assault style of game. Assault had the right ideas in place and was a very good game for its time. Now I feel we could expand on this type of game, but with a more polished game with deeper story and better over all game play.

@LucasJG1994
If there was to be a 2D star fox game, then I like your ideas for a strategy game =], don’t really know what else you could do for a 2D star fox game though or i’d give you more ideas.
Happylion18
November 14, 2015 | 11:54 PM
@LucasJG1994
I don’t think Star Fox translates to 2D very well. But if forced, it would probably have to be a side-scrolling shooter like R-Type, or a top-down bullet hell game like Ikaruga. Something that involves precision flying while shooting.
@Happylion18
The problem with this line of reasoning is that you’re comparing the perfect Star Fox game in your imagination to the existing Star Fox games (and other games) that exist in the real world. Nintendo already tried to make a Star Fox game that was about more than one thing. It was called Star Fox Assault. Assault had a mediocre flying game and a bad third-person on-foot game. Adventures, on the other hand, was almost exclusively third-person adventure with very little flying segments. Because Rare focused exclusively on one type of gameplay, that gameplay was better. Adventures is a better game than Assault because of this, EVEN THOUGH Adventures wasn’t like a Star Fox game AND the actual flying parts were worse than Assault’s. When companies make a single product that does more than one thing, that product will ALWAYS be worse than a similar product that focused only on one thing. There are limits to what human programmers can do.
Now, Nintendo could go off, spend 5+ years implementing a Skyrim type engine and working out how to fit Star Fox into it. It would cost millions and millions of dollars to create, and the market for it would be… well not very big. After all, the people who want to play Skyrim already have Skyrim. By doing something unique, like say… an arcade-style flight shooter (of which there is zero market competition currently), they can make a more unique and interesting experience than Generic Open-World Game VI: Star Fox. “Now with more fur!”
Mr. Krystal
November 15, 2015 | 5:30 PM
@Mr.Krystal
What a shame XD cause that last idea on the list there “now with more fur” sounds pretty hilarious and fun. But your point on the market makes sense. There’s alot of games like that already, making a similar game would leave it with alot of competition.
Hapylion18
November 15, 2015 | 7:26 PM
@Mr. Krystal
I couldn’t disagree with you more, Adventures and Assault to me, proved that Star Fox can go far and beyond then being a simple vehicles gameplay with on-rail and all range mode. I mean, I like to do sight seeing in not just the arwing, but also on foot. It could be like a Ratchet and Clank of Nintendo with a similar, yet different gameplay style.

@LucasJG1994
Absolutely no need to be sorry, you get a cool new step mom, 2 birthdays and 2 Christmases, and less grumpy parents :P everything works out. And I can’t do email well from my phone, but I do have a mint laptop I take everywhere. So while I could Skype and or email now, I’m to lazy… Nah ill get them out now :P. So what do you want about e-mails?
@Happylion18
Change your major to software engineering or computer science. Trust me. You can pick up game design as a minor, but programming skills are going to be essential.
@Mr. Krystal @Happylion18
Thanks Mr. Krystal for that info, it has really helped me to understand what a Star Fox game is.
Happylion18 anything is fine if you want to use email or Skype
I actually cannot tell you all specifically what I’m going for off of memory and my adviser for next semester took of with my paper work which i need to steal back this Monday XD.
@ Mr. Krystal
As of right now my equipment supports 2d game engines. I’ll be moving on to 3d later on. If you were to play a 2d Star Fox game what would you be looking for.
Ok on a laptop now XD so I can keep up with all this stuff =p.
@Mr.Krystal
@LucasJG1994
If there was to be a 2D star fox game, then I like your ideas for a strategy game =], don’t really know what else you could do for a 2D star fox game though or i’d give you more ideas.
@LucasJG1994
I don’t think Star Fox translates to 2D very well. But if forced, it would probably have to be a side-scrolling shooter like R-Type, or a top-down bullet hell game like Ikaruga. Something that involves precision flying while shooting.
@Happylion18
@Mr.Krystal
What a shame XD cause that last idea on the list there “now with more fur” sounds pretty hilarious and fun. But your point on the market makes sense. There’s alot of games like that already, making a similar game would leave it with alot of competition.
@Mr. Krystal
