Star Fox 2 To Be Released!!!
I honestly never thought I'd see the day! Nintendo just announced the long-rumored Super NES Classic. Included among the games is the original Star Fox and, believe it not, Star Fox 2. Star Fox 2 was never officially released. An unfinished developer preview of the game was leaked years ago, but as Dylan Cuthbert mentioned in an interview, the leaked game was missing significant content from the finished version. Fortunately for us now, the final game was indeed finished, even after cancellation of the project, because the developers were so close to the end of development. My guess is that this is the real, final version of the game, not the internet-leaked incomplete version.
Also nice is to have the first official re-release of the original Star Fox. Star Fox for the Super NES has never been re-released to any virtual console or official remake, likely due to the complexities of emulating the Super FX chip that made the early 3D graphics possible.
Of course, there are lots of other great games it includes:
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- EarthBound
- Final Fantasy III
- F-ZERO
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby's Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Yoshi's Island
The Super NES Classic will release September 29th for $79.99. I just called my local GameStop and they said they don't even have it in the system yet. So no idea when or how to get a reserve, but you can bet that I will be getting my hands on a copy as soon as possible! To my great shame, I've never actually played through the original Star Fox, so I'm looking forward to correcting that mistake.

I totally forgot that in europe we have the famicom like system and in america they have the square box with the purple switches.
I was thinking buying the Nes Classic, but now
SCREW IT!!! I’m buying first day. Also I only tried starfox on the snes for a bit. Can’t wait to play both games. Also, I heard that sf2 is unlockable after you beat the first level at the original starfox.
You’re not the only one deeply surprised by this, dylan also said that it was likely not possible that it would ever be released, talk about surprising, More over i’m really curious to see how this affects the games canon and what we’re missing from the old roms. but this definitely means that starfox is being looked at actively by nintendo, quite interesting.
I’m holding out hope that Star Fox 2 is the finished game with full content that Cuthbert mentioned in his interview. It would be a true shame is all the world got was a cleaned up copy of the current fan translation, lol. Not ashamed to say it, but I’m hoping the SNES Mini gets cracked as quickly as the NES Mini was, and someone dumps that ROM. I want to play it on my 3DS!
@Arecaidian Fox
I’m also waiting to get hacked, in order to play any game I wish (that didn’t sound very well).

I saw on YouTube someone By the name “The Drakon” who managed to overclock the FX chip on the Starfox cardidge using a crystal oscillator in order to achieve higher framerates at the cost of higher game speed due to game timings. I hope that Nintendo adds a low framerate mode for nolstagia and a high framerate in both Starfox games. Plus I have heard that Starfox 2 had a more powerful version of the FX chip.
It’s going to be an especially big slap in the face if they take the same track with this Mini console that they did with the NES Mini. I’ve already given up hope on ever getting one of these because you just know they will, and it’s a shame that this lost classic probably won’t ever get released anywhere else because of the technical difficulties you describe.
Though if this runs on emulation just like the NES Mini, I wonder what makes them able to do it THIS time around…
That is my dream …
screw microsoft, i want killer instinct in there, officially.
@Alex
Nintendo has stated they have significantly more SNES Classic consoles in production than the NES Classic.
Call me a pessimist, but I don’t find that as reassuring as most people might. I still think they’re going to just pull the plug way too soon and once these things are gone, they’re gone. They haven’t said anything about that yet, but based on how things went last time…
@Alex
“You’re a pessimist.” They are probably only going to produce them for 2017 and maybe early 2018. We already know that. However, you’re forgetting that most of these games can be bought on VC. So, even if you can’t get this system, you can always play the games. I suspect they will make all these games available, including the two Star Fox games, via VC soon after this thing finishes its run. The Switch doesn’t have its VC set up yet, and no-one knows what they will do with it yet.
Keyword being “most”. As already stated that’s not likely for SF2, and for the rest, I don’t know why people go bonkers over these things if they’re just repackagings of games you can get on VC or elsewhere. There has to be some additional draw, but I’ll probably never get my hands on one to figure out what that’s supposed to be.
Aside from SF2, of course.
@Alex
Just do what I’m doing: go to GameStop at 4AM on September 29th and get in line. Worked with the Wii. Worked with the Switch.
Plus, by then, Metroid: Samus Returns will have just come out, so you can play that while you wait. Metroid: Samus Returns IS available for preorder right now. I already got mine preordered.
