Star Fox Cameos in Smash Wii U Show Up, Krystal Curiously Absent
GameExplain shows off a video of some (all?) Star Fox easter egg conversations on the Star Fox Assault: Orbital Gate level in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. Curiously, not only is Krystal completely absent from the level she should have been in, but there are only 3 Arwings flying around. In EVERY Star Fox game, there are ALWAYS 4 Arwings, unless one is in for repair, I suppose. The Star Wolf team didn't appear in this level either, even though they show up in the Assault level. It's more than a little curious that none of those characters show up at all anywhere in the game except for past references in older levels.
What does this mean? Krystal content blocked by embargo dates? Krystal DLC planned for later? An attempt to remove Krystal (and Star Wolf?) from series canon? LOL, ok, that last one was ridiculous. Smash Bros. has never been canon about anything.
As for the cameos themselves, there's positives and negatives...
Positive
- The dialog is designed to be more specific to what the characters are actually doing, rather than being super generic about the fact that there are brawlers on their ships
- It's got that corny sci-fi flavor
- Falco's voice
- ROB's voice
- Fox's voice (barely)
- Aside from the lack of Krystal, the level is surprisingly accurate to what happens in the actual Assault level
Negative
- Ok, maybe the dialog is a bit TOO corny sometimes :D
- No dialog from the Cornerian military (Dog Soldier) or Beltino
- Slippy's voice (barely)
- Peppy's voice (seriously, what?)
- WHERE'S KRYSTAL?!
- WHERE'S STAR WOLF?!
Thanks to Jordan who sent this in.
Update
These are not new voice actors. They are all returning actors from Star Fox 64 3D, see the comments.

That actually kind of pisses me off – Fox has a new voice in EVERY GAME. Couldn’t they find ONE that they liked? THIS one sounds ESPECIALLY lazy, like they got an intern to voice him for this game and didn’t tell him what he was voicing for, let alone give him ANY direction.
My favorite was his voice in 64, the one from Adventures wasn’t so bad either… and by Assault I gave up hope. They’re just not even trying anymore.
Of course the dialogue is corny. They’re from Corneria, right?
maybe the dialogue or what ever is very specific, I’m thinking that if your fox you could trigger a conversation with her, but as you say, I’m thinking they may or may not introduce her into smash.
I really hope that they do, I mean I’ve been waiting since middle school for something like this.
the voice acting is probably still in beta form and isn’t done by the pro actors. man does Peppy sound weird. I really hope they get his Assault version into the game.
I can only think of three possibilities here:
1. Maybe if you play as Fox or Falco, Krystal takes their place up in the air and becomes part of the conversation. Even though Gamexplain said this is ALL the conversations…you never see them playing as Fox or Falco in the video. Maybe they just forgot to test it and see what happens if you play as one of those characters…or they did, and nothing changes.
2. Krystal is planned for future DLC, and Nintendo wants to keep her presence hidden until then.
3. Nintendo has decided to drop Krystal from the Star Fox team. They are planning on going back to the original team of Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy for Star Fox U…so they did not want to include Krystal here, even though it’s an Assault themed stage.
Unfortunately, I think number 3 is the most likely.
I totally called it. I am telling you folks, Nintendo wants to go back to its original star fox roots. And yes, It is extremely odd having her absence considering her bigger role in assault. As of now my expectation are very, very, VERY, low for her inclusion in the new star fox game and even lower as DLC. I know I may sound like I don’t support her or being pessimistic, don’t get me wrong, I love her as a character. I am just thinking rationally. You can thank all those nostalgic star fox 64 fan boys for her absence. those people complained too much about the newer games. In my opinion Star Fox Assault was my favorite if not the best in the series. But for now ill just leave it in Miyamoto’s hands. Mr. Sakurai already disappointed me.
Either they are lazy or the voice actor was spot on. ROB sounds as though he has the same voice clip from assault when he says “Missile Approaching”
For everyone’s information, this is the voice cast of the Star Fox characters in this game:
1. Fox McCloud – Mike West (SF64, SF643D)
2. Falco Lombardi – Mark Lund (SF643D)
3. Peppy Hare – Jaz Adams (SF643D)
4. Slippy Toad – Lyssa Browne (SF64, SF643D)
5. ROB 64 – currently unknown
Jeez, it’s like everyone here thinks that they got new voice actors, when in fact we’ve heard these guys before. In my opinion, Mike, Jaz, and Mark are fine for Fox, Peppy, and Falco, but Lyssa does not work at all for modern Slippy. She was fine for Slippy in SF643D, since that was during the Lylat Wars, but not here.
It is weird Krystal or Star Wolf don’t appear in the level but I wouldn’t get my hopes up for Krystal being DLC thou I would be overjoyed if that came true and as for Wolf if he DOES come back as DLC I’m hoping his keeps his Brawl voice because I can’t picture his 64 VA saying “We’re gonna fun with this thing” or “What’s a matter scared ?” they sounded too perfect to be voiced by someone else.
Let’s remain calm on this. Doubt that both Wolf and Krystal have been written off of something like this just because of a codec we recently saw in the video. Surely there’s more to it than just that. I think we’re overthinking this too much. This is Nintendo we’re taking about. They are notorious for keeping fans in the dark of something like this and they have done this to their other franchises Besides Starfox. Yes I don’t like this as much as you guys. The best to do now is play Smash 4 and find out the rest of it on our own when we play as Fox or Falco in the Orbital Gate Assault stage. Besides, the release date is drawing closer and we should be excited for Starfox Wii U since 2015 is rolling in soon and I’m optimistic to see Krystal and Wolf return in Starfox Wii U since I know they’ll be back. Otherwise I would find it being blasphemous of them being written off for no reason. But I doubt that’s going to happen for them being killed off despite the huge fanbase that both Krystal and Wolf have. Even Miyamoto along with Nintendo knows better than that.
Anyway, I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for Krystal and Wolf for DLC in Smash 4 because all of us want them in and we know it. You know, if Krystal makes it in, I wonder what Palutena would say about her in the temple when you play as Pit and the same goes for Wolf.
if that was the original voice actor/actresses on star fox 64, (shugs) I guess they don’t fit in really well into the game like it was back then. about the video, I also wonder how come they (krystal and the star wolf team) not in the dialog thing and have lines. this could be it all the cameos they get if not more.
Wonder if this means they’ll be DLC? Hmmmmmmm? Or I don’t know. ope fully Star Fox Wii U doesn’t reboot everything and Krystal is out of the picture, cuz I admit she’s one of my favorites. Wolf IS muy favorite. DO IT NINTENDO! Wolf and Krystal DLC!!
@all
I don’t buy the whole removing-Krystal-and-Wolf-from-canon theory. I can’t think of a single character in any Nintendo franchise that Nintendo has made a game with, and then later set up a situation in which bringing that character back would break continuity. The closest one I can think of is Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2, but Shy Guys and other Super Mario Bros. 2 characters appear in later games, even up until today with Mario Kart 8.
@Mr. Krystal
King K. Rool from the donkey kong country series is one of them. But I don’t know,I just have a bad feeling. That is all I am going to say.
Nintendo broke my heart =( …. Where is Krystal , Where is Cornelia Soldier and Where is Krystal?
Wait! I see Cornelia Soldier =)
I have remained silent on the matter because there is much speculation and we as a fan base do not want, nor do we like to, admit that over the years nintendo has subjected to social/psychological experiments… not the kind where oooh, they gonna brain wash you oogga booga thing. The kind where the tests where we are all given a piece of candy and the candy changes slightly over time and they decide how the next test will be. I hope I don’t ramble :s
tl;dr (mod(s) pls delete the other garbage if you want… It seemed like I was rambling but these did need some background info)
I have dreamed, yes like woken up remembering a dream. Where the story can end up with these possible scenarios.
-krystal becomes a 2nd character like katt and helps starfox and starwolf when needed in game
-krystal ends up back with fox after being betrayed by wolf or panther
-krysal ends up lost and in her own spin off game like intended since adventures
-krystal is left and forgotten or killed (literally) but pepy’s daughter or amanda take her place (this is possible but there has been nothing on these characters referenced or otherwise backed from what I have seen, perhaps katt joins?)
… so yeah mr. krystal makes a solid point they are not just going to kill of krystal, at least not without introducing a viable replacement or solution.
krystal is not the first female in the series. I think it was Katt and in the comics, there was this other chick fox was smitten with. I think at this point in time nintendo thinks it is important to have a female character, because a) its literally a wienerfest b) it would attract more girls to play the game c) they look less sexist.
If they realized that krystal failed at one of these three things they may not necessarily remove her but change her role from a main character to a secondary character, like katt.
next, this game has had a tendency to reboot every so often. from starfox, to starfox 64, to starfox 64 3ds. this is understandable to allow new generations of kids appreciate the game. However unlike other (for lack of a better word) neglected games such as donkey kong and metroid, starfox’s story line in the nintendo universe has not really expanded as much, at least imho.
I get it that they said they don’t want to focus on the story line but the next game will have to have a story line because unlike most starfox games there were a lot of possible endings… mostly involving krystal and fox. Moreover if you see the trophies for the smash 3ds you see a little bit of foreshadowing. “… are his feelings true” – panther’s 3ds torphey. “did her powers help or hinder their relationship” -krystal. “… this james mccloud is not related to that human” – james mccloud. As we can see they are clearly, slowly, and intentionally leaving hints at the next game. Krystal will be with star wolf in what seems to be some relationship with panther, unfortunately. :C <(also out of the 9 endings in SF command, there are only a few that stand out and have not been disproven yet but may yet to be seen… don't make sense; the krystal marrying fox, krystal and fox's kid the new leader of SF, kursed, loner falco, and the heroines; I can get more into these if you want but that would be like a short essay I think seeing what I am typing already :s)
go ahead an hate if you are a krystal+panther fan but the great thing about nintendo is that the hero "aesthetically" gets the princess in the end. I say aesthetically, because there are theories like where peach has Stockholm syndrome and rosalina is actually luigi's kid…etc.
As to what the outcome really will be, we can all guess but nintendo is like that one crazy religious zelot out in the rain/snow saying the end it near… they are crazy and they have our precious game in their hands. n-not that its a bad thing necessarily. Honestly we as fans would make a very biased games and we probably would have a hard time making "the ideal ending", nintendo as a 3rd party and by allowing a few creative minds may yet allow this series to be very very popular.
I have written these dreams and well they don't even need a lot of story to accomplish, just one of two pieces of dialogue, and the right setting… even came up with one where starfox has a whole DC moment where the heros and villans travel through the multi verse of nintendo, or alt. versions of starfox… very confusing but doable.

So here is some new confirmed stuff from those with the game. Alesia Glidewell is in the credits, meaning Krystal is somewhere, lol.
Playing Smash Wii U now, and I can confirm that Krystal (and Wolf, Leon, and Panther) are indeed back on the Lylat Cruise stage. Going to try the Orbital Gate stage next.
Not sure the taunt trick works on Orbital Gate… I tried it for a full loop of the stage, but nothing happened. Oh well, at least Krystal’s still in Lylat Cruise.
@anonyms
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, very interesting and well thought out speculations. If she is somehow removed though, its not the end of the world. those old games will always have a place in my heart.
whoops I misspelled “anonymous” how embarrassing. wish you can go back and re edit your comments. oh well lol
Krystal is NOT Cornarian, she is Borg… (Kqétian Borg) And Kqét Inc forbade her from being playable as of 2010 when Nintendl lost the Law suit against Kqét Inc for breach of contract. She will never be Playable again.
GOD! Why is it so hard to give Slippy a decent voice! They gave him a great one in Assault, but really Smash Bros? He sounds awful…. And Fox doesn’t sound good either.
I guess it’s not much of a bad thing that Krystal is not in the cameos in this stage. Lylat Cruise from Super Smash Bros Brawl that still has the same conversations, so she’s not out of the picture. I don’t like Peppy and Slippy’s new voice either. I am one of the big Krystal fans that signed Joseph Turner’s petition to get Krystal in as DLC. I’m not getting the game until we at least know Krystal is in development as DLC because we’ve been wanting Krystal playable in a Super Smash Bros for around a decade and Nintendo never listens. They been keeping Krystal and Krystal fans out in the cold ever since the release of Star Fox Command and they are breaking my heart. If Krystal does make it as DLC, i’ll celebrate and cry in happiness. I’m fighting very hard to get my message across to them. It’s not too late Krystal fans, keep fighting, possibly more DLC characters will be revealed in the months to come. We love you Krystal and miss you very much!
