TechnicolorCosplay’s Krystal Behind the Scenes

TechnicolorCosplay, a relatively recent Krystal cosplayer who specializes in winter outfits, had a business trip out near me in Texas. We got together to talk cosplay and an idea was hatched to show off some of the behind-the-scenes knowledge about cosplays of this type. I have always had a fascination with how things work and the technical details of how things are constructed, so I hope you'll be able to share in that with me thanks to these photos and explanations. Also, for those of you interested in doing your own cosplay, perhaps this information will be helpful to you.
WARNING: I know from personal experience that some people get disillusioned when the fantastical nature of cosplay is broken by seeing behind the scenes. So if you want to keep cosplay somewhat magical by not knowing these details, feel free to skip the rest of this post.
Besides Ayano Harumaki, TechnicolorCosplay is the only other Krystal cosplayer I have met in person so far. I enjoyed our conversations! Before we get into the details, I wanted to express my gratitude for the gifts that were brought along for me. I received a Krystal pin and a Loona pin made by NaysPinClub, aka Nayel-ie (who almost did a Krystal cosplay herself). I also received two postcards and a collectable cosplayer card; all three of TechnicolorCosplay's Krystal cosplay.

In July 2024, a new Krystal cosplayer appeared on the scene along with a Fox cosplayer. You can see our previous coverage here, here, and here. We were able to contact each other and in August 2024, the cosplay duo known as Tom_MJcosplay were gracious enough to let me interview them about their experience cosplaying at Montreal ComiCon 2024 as well as their future plans. Life got in the way, but I'm making it right by posting what I know now. I don't have a lot of new info, but it's worth sharing.
They are a cosplaying couple living in Canada. Marie-Dauphin Cosplay (the Krystal cosplayer) does not speak English (primarily speaks French) and so her husband (the Fox cosplayer) had to translate for me during the interview.
They went into more detail on the staff, which is quite effective for how simple its construction was. It was literally made of 3 children's lightsabers taped together and covered in patterned foil. They used a standard LED light strip up the shaft for the light, and they used cellophane and wax paper as a diffuser. The 3D parts of the cosplay were built in Shaper 3D on an iPad (I think), and then they used a standard 3D printer to make the parts.
They showed me the Krystal head, which uses the standard system for making fursuit heads have a movable mouth.
I found out that the reason their skit was cut short because the con had imposed a hard limit of 1 minute for skits and their's was longer than that. They had hoped to do the skit fully at another con after that, only to find out that the new con's skit time limit was only 45 seconds. They would like to record the skit themselves out in the wilderness at some point in 2025.
They are working on revamps of their costumes, and are planning Star Fox Assault inspired cosplays.
They plan to attend more cons in 2025 dressed as Fox and Krystal.
- They are attending RouynCon as special guests in July 2025.
- They will be at AnimeNorth in Toronto for the masquerade in May.
- Then it's ComicCon in Montreal in July.
- The next one they plan to go to is the New York ComicCon in October.
Thanks to both of you for taking the time to talk to me. Once again, I'm sorry it took me so long to post about what you told me. We all look forward to your cosplay exploits in 2025!

Update:
When the story was initially posted, I mentioned that Tom_MJcosplay were a married couple. They are not married yet, but they are a couple. My mistake! I also updated the list of upcoming cons they plan to attend to include three additional ones besides RouynCon. Finally, I added details about their plans to make new Star Fox Assault inspired costumes and finally record their skit properly in 2025. Thanks for the updated info, Tommy!
Recent Dinosaur Planet Krystal Cosplayer Found!

A couple weeks back, I posted about a Dinosaur Planet Krystal cosplayer I recently became aware of. I had very little information about the cosplayer and only one photo I could post.
A couple days ago, the cosplayer herself contacted me. She was gracious enough to answer my questions and provide additional photos. Without further ado, here is all the information and photos I have.
Meet the Cosplayers
The Krystal cosplayer doesn't have much of an online presence. She once used the handle GreyscaleDragon (the account that originally posted the first photos), but now she goes by Soil-licker. She has a Tumblr blog, but she doesn't really post cosplay there. She's a self-described shy person.
Soil-licker has been cosplaying since the age of 14, after her brother introduced her to the hobby. She has loved Star Fox Adventures since she was little, as it was one of the first GameCube games she had. She became obsessed with the Dinosaur Planet beta footage around 2018, hoping to one day try the game. In 2021, when the preview build of Dinosaur Planet leaked which occupied all of her time for a while. The leak, and Yume Aislinn's Dinosaur Planet Krystal cosplay inspired Soil-licker to finally make this Krystal cosplay.
Soil-licker has previously cosplayed as:
- Jet the Hawk from Sonic Riders
- Shiny Decidueye from Pokémon
- Whisper the Wolf from the Sonic IDW comics
Soil-licker plans to keep this Krystal cosplay around for a long time. Perhaps we'll see new photos in the future!
Her twin sister sister, who goes by apocalispwins online, was the cosplayer of Dinosaur Planet Fox McCloud who appears in some of the photos. She wanted to do Fox McCloud instead of Sabre because she really liked the model. I believe she only made an appearance as Fox one time, at Youmacon 2022.
The Con Experience
The two cons we knew about, Youmacon 2022 and Isshocon 2025 were the only cons where she has cosplayed as Krystal. Soil-licker never expected anyone to recognize her character, as this was just a "for me" cosplay, according to her. The fact that people did recognize her made the experience a blast for her. She is proud of the cosplay and how turned out.
She did not enter any contests at either con. Mostly, she prefers to wander about and sightsee at cons.
Cosplay Creation
The outfit was made as a romper style dress, sewn by apocalispwins. The books were normal boots with some fabric modification. The arm ring and bracer were made with EVA foam. The wig was made by Arda Wigs. The ears and tail were made by Pawstar, with some slight modifications to the ears to make them more accurate to Krystal. The necklace is a brown ribbon with a gem found on Etsy.
The downside is that it's not very warm. The only cons she has been to while wearing it were during winter months, so she got cold. Other than that, the suit is comfortable.
The staff is a spray-painted PVC pipe. It's her favorite part of the cosplay, in spite of its simplicity.
Soil-licker enjoyed creating the cosplay, with most of the work being completed in a single day. She lost part of the costume, the bracer, at Isshocon 2025. She's going to make another one.
As for apocalispwins' Fox McCloud cosplay, most of it was made from thrift store clothing altered to match Fox's look in Dinosaur Planet. The sword was made by her husband out of PVC pipe and EVA foam.
Thanks for the great info and photos, Soil-licker! Keep up the good work!

Krystal Cosplay Week
Hey everybody! Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I'm going to fix that right now!
Each day this week, I'll be posting about Krystal cosplay. We've got new cosplayers, behind-the-scenes details, and even a lost video that I should have posted a long time ago. (Whoops!)
So check it out. The first post is happening RIGHT NOW! Reload the page if you don't see a new post about a recently discovered cosplayer.
Nintendo’s Avengers – Star Fox Meets Cloud
Christopher Ruiz has been making parody videos featuring Nintendo and Smash Bros characters. Krystal appears in some of them.
In this one, the scene is from Avengers: Infinity war, where the Star Fox Team makes up most of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters as they find Cloud Strife (who is portraying Thor) floating in space. The dynamic between Fox and Krystal is amazing.
Cloudrunner Fortress Testrun – Star Fox Event Horizon
In UndyingNephalim's ongoing development of fangame Star Fox Event Horizon, he presents this new CloudRunner Fortress level. An alternate path to the Walled City, a level we already covered, it's a chaotic scene that sees Krystal and Fox riding on the CloudRunner Kyte over the CloudRunner Fortress as they defend it from SharpClaws and even their own people. Voice acting hasn't been implemented in the level yet, but one of the things it does have is other forces than the ones you are actively fighting making actual progress through the level. Basically, stuff is happening even if you the player are not involved. Pretty detailed!
Estelle Ellis Has Signed Copies of Adventures

Estelle Ellis got her hands on a few Star Fox Adventures games (the PAL/European version) and is making them available as signed merchandise. Since I haven't heard back from her yet, I don't know what they will cost or how the shipping will be handled. Regardless, as of yesterday, there were still some available. Check out the original post and send her a DM if you're interested. She started working on this project back on February 23rd.
Dinosaur Planet: A Player’s Perspective of Today
YouTuber Jigglylookback recently released a video detailing his experiences with the released debug build of Dinosaur Planet combined with play a more recent fan build from this year called Dinomod Enhanced. He covers the details of what was broken, what's still broken, and the state of the game today. The video also covers the history of the game's development, how it compares to Star Fox Adventures, and a summary of the entire game's plot, so beware of spoilers!
To achieve find all this detail for his video, Jiggylookback did five streams where he played through the Dinomod Enhanced 2025 build of Dinosaur Planet. If you want to see the whole game, start to finish (not counting the still missing sections and features), you can watch these:
- Dinosaur Planet on N64
- More Dinosaur Planet on N64
- Even More Dinosaur Planet on N64
- Can We Make More Progress? Dinosaur Planet on N64
- The Home Stretch... Dinosaur Planet on N64
The fan community has brought the game to a much more playable state since the original release in 2021. I suspect with all the new N64 decompilation work going on lately, this game may be next to get the decompilation treatment. If that happens, fixes, adjustments, and mods for the game will become relatively easy to make.
If you're interested in following the ongoing fan development of Dinosaur Planet, there are at least two Discord servers you can join. If you're interested in the very cutting edge of modern Nintendo 64 development, check out the videos by Kaze Emanuar, who is currently developing an unofficial sequel to Mario 64 called "Return to Yoshi's Island". He's been using every trick in the book, and sometimes writing his own, to pull out the absolute maximum performance out of real N64 hardware, and it shows, with the Mario 64-like game running above 30 frames per second with tons more detail, better textures, better physics and movesets, and 15 brand new worlds. The game will be releasing sometime in 2025 or 2026 by my estimation. Here's an example video where he shows off his underwater dome level.
I've recently become very excited for the state of N64 development, with Dinosaur Planet, these decompilations, and the soon-to-be-released Analogue 3D, a high-end, system-accurate FPGA N64 clone that can do 4K video output.
Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I had to go on a business trip where I got sick AGAIN (4th time in 2 months).
TechnicolorCosplay’s Krystal Cosplay Planned Appearances

Krystal cosplayer, TechnicolorCosplay (known for the Ice Krystal variant pictured above) will be appearing as Krystal at a couple of upcoming events. This cosplay should also include the version 1 staff that I helped produce.
First is this Saturday, February 22nd at the Fan Expo in Vancouver Canada. I'm told this Krystal cosplay will be taking the stage again this year.
Then, from March 7th through 8th, TechnicolorCosplay will also wear the Krystal cosplay at the Emerald City ComicCon in Seattle Washington.
Star Fox Assault Voice Acting Clips Released

I mentioned on the Star Fox Assault 20th Anniversary post that I was working on a secret surprise project. It took my entire weekend, but here they are! The complete set of Star Fox Assault voice acting clips, annotated and categorized. I posted them on StarFox.org where you can view and play them right in your browser. Future updates will allow searching, filtering, and other stuff like that. (I also made a small update to the visual style of StarFox.org itself.)
There's a total of 3290 clips, some of which are in Japanese or pure sound effects, but the vast majority are all the individual voice acting clips from the English version of the game. It even includes some unused clips and the versions used in the E3 demos with the REALLY bad voice acting.
Also, there are over 450 Krystal clips here!
Some of you long-time readers are probably thinking to yourself. "Wait a minute! Didn't he do that years ago?" Kinda. Back on February 26th, 2015, I asked for your help in annotating these clips using a Google spreadsheet. Most of the work was done within a couple weeks thanks to many volunteers. For those of you who helped, thank you so much!
Unfortunately, I noticed some inconsistencies. I started to go through them one by one to verify the clips. Alas, that was going to be a tremendous amount of work. So much work that I started putting it off longer and longer. Without realizing it, almost 10 years had gone by! But 2025 is my year of finishing unfinished projects, so this is one more off that long list! Hopefully more StarFox.org related stuff will get released soon. I have tons to do.
So enjoy! This is my way of celebrating Star Fox Assault's 20th Anniversary.
